Mike  > Travel > Venezuela 2007 > Orinoco Delta People
This is a collection of portraits of the Warao people living in the Orinoco Delta. These are some of the most authentic indigenous people I've ever visited in my travels.

This place is full of children and I must say that the children here were one of the highlights of the trip. The large number of children is due to the large families and high mortality rate of the children especially the males who can be afflicted by a deadly disease.

Mike > My favourite portrait.
Mike > Is the child hiding his prized jewels on purpose?!?

Joking apart, the small baskets the children are holding are make by the tribe people themselves who are very good at weaving and creating baskets. These baskets are also sold as souvenirs to tourists here.
Mike > A warao in the making. After the tree trunk is dug out the trunk is put fire to seal it and expand the wood giving it the structure of a canoe.
Mike > There's the kitchen for you. I really would have liked to taste what was inside.
Mike > If I knew my child would be as cute as this one I'd probably make a bigger effort with the girls.

Mike > Not all children can be found playing. Some of them are rowing in the river probably taking the canoe over to transport something.
